Our semi-scalloped nuts and saddles retain carefully shaped string-bearing points while material is relieved between them. The geometry is made and polished by hand, with string spacing, action and compensation considered together.
At the saddle, the fit and stiffness of the contact help determine how string vibration reaches the bridge. At the nut, the bearing points define the open strings' speaking lengths and their clearance above the frets. Accurate shaping matters at least as much as the material name.
Bone and selected natural mammoth bone are available according to the instrument specification. We assess each piece for suitability and fit; its density and stiffness are part of the voicing decision, not a universal promise of brighter tone or longer sustain.
The relief removes material between the strings while retaining the bearing surfaces they need. It changes the component's mass and shape without replacing careful slot depth, compensation or a well-fitted base. Our semi-scalloped design is distinct from a scalloped fingerboard.
Like other natural bone, it provides a hard, stiff string-contact material. Differences in density, damping and fit can influence the response, especially at the saddle. Individual pieces vary, so we select and voice the material with the instrument rather than claim one guaranteed tonal advantage over other bone.
